Context

Constitution does not define minority but it is classified on the basis of religion and language, and at state level as per Supreme Court judgement. To ensure their fundamental rights, fulfil DPSP, and considering social realities, the government set up National commission for minorities under the 1992 at. Six religious communities are Muslims, Christians, sikhs, Buddhists, Zoroastrians and Jains. It also abide by UN declaration to protect the rights of minorities and encourage the promotion of their identity.

Functions

It has the functions of: Evaluate, monitor the working of safeguards for minorities and to give advice to Central and state governments.
Look into specific complaints, promote studies of problems, conduct research and analysis on social economic and educational development of minorities, Act as a quasi-judicial body.

Structure

Consists of a chairman, vice-chairman and five members of eminence. These members and chairmen are from minority community.
